Gripping from the first chapter, Father, Mother is a poignant story dealing with the loss of one’s parents and the journeying through their last weeks. The depiction of Mother, her experiences with dementia, and the residual effects on her children are incredibly moving. An additionally compelling element of the novella is the role of music and literature as a sort of therapy, bonding a child to his mother even through her diminishing health, and giving Mother an anchor in the last days of her life. A quick read, but so full of emotion and plenty to glean from every page.
